2014 BWH STARS Program Applications are now Open! APPLY HERE Greetings, We are writing to tell you about an exciting summer research opportunity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) for your underrepresented minority (URM) undergraduate rising juniors and seniors or first year medical students.  The Office for Multicultural Faculty Careers at BWH is recruiting its sixth cohort of scholars to participate in the Summer Training in Academic Research and Scholarship (STARS) Program. Briefly, students are invited to join us for 8 weeks to engage in basic, clinical or translational research projects under the supervision of BWH faculty advisers.  As well as conducting research, students will also receive professional development training, meet faculty from across the hospital and medical school, and participate in social networking events. The BWH STARS Program will cover students’ travel costs to and from Boston, cost of housing, selected meals and activities, and a Research Trainee stipend. This is a great opportunity for your students to train in the Harvard Medical School environment. The application deadline is January 27, 2014 and students will be notified of their selection by March 3, 2014. Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP)

The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) opens its 2014 online application process November 1st 2013!  The National Program Office (NPO) looks forward to processing applications from eager freshman and sophomore college students who want to become physicians or dentists. 

Students who meet the following eligibility requirements may be accepted at one of our 12 medical and dental institutions:

• Be currently enrolled as a freshman or sophomore in college;
• Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5;
• Be a U.S. citizen or hold a permanent resident visa; and
• Not have previously participated in SMDEP.

SMDEP is implemented at 12 program sites (80 students per site) across the nation. Each program site provides scholars with academic enrichment in the basic sciences and math, clinical experiences, career development activities, learning and study skills seminars, and a financial planning workshop.

This free six-week residential program is hosted by the following participating institutions:

• Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and College of Dental Medicine
• Duke University School of Medicine

VCU Summer Academic Enrichment Program (SAEP)

Virginia Commonwealth University will be offering the Summer Academic Enrichment Program (SAEP) to students who are interested in pursuing a career in dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, or physical therapy this coming summer in Richmond, Virginia. 

Here are the details:

WHAT: SAEP is an inter-professional program designed to simulate the first year of a health profession program. Upon completion of the program, participants will have the tools that will help them assess their strengths and weaknesses in regards to successful application and matriculation into a health professions school.

WHO: SAEP is geared towards junior and senior undergraduate students, and post-baccalaureate students who are actively pursuing enrollment into dental, medical, pharmacy, or physical therapy school. Preference is given to those of a disadvantaged (educational, social, or economic) background.

WHEN: SAEP is a six-week program (May 21, 2014 – July 2, 2014).  Students are required to attend the full program.

WHERE: SAEP will take place on VCU’s MCV campus in Richmond, Virginia. Housing will be provided in Cabaniss Hall.

HOW: Students should apply online at www.dhsd.vcu.edu between November 1, 2013 – February 15, 2014.  In addition to the online application, students are required to submit official college transcripts and two letters of reference.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

- The program is FREE!  Students will receive a stipend!

-Three core courses taught at a professional level

-Discipline specific lab work (dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, or physical therapy)

-Workshops on learning skills, test taking, mock interviews, and more

Medical Terminology and Public Speaking J-Term Courses

EDHS 2850: Medical Terminology; 3-credit hours
The class will cover medical term etymology and a system-based approach to understanding the language of medicine.  The objective of this class is to encourage interdisciplinary communication among medical practitioners and other health care professionals as they prepare for the “real world” of medicine.  This course will provide a foundation for anyone wanting to pursue a career in the allied health professions or health related industry.

ENSP 1060: Public Speaking; 3-credit hours  

Through theoretical instruction and practice, students will learn to prepare and deliver public presentations. We will learn techniques for handling speech anxiety, analyzing your audience, organizing and composing an effective argument, and improving diction, projection, and delivery. We will also be discussing the difference between oral and written style in language, the role of the body in public speaking, and how to achieve specific goals in speeches: speaking to inform, to persuade, to commemorate. We will begin every class period with physical, vocal, and relaxation exercises. Grades will be based on class attendance, participation, and the preparation and delivery of two 6-8 minute presentations. Our goal is neither to memorize nor to read these speeches, but to learn the art of extemporaneous delivery, where a carefully prepared and rehearsed speech may seem to arise spontaneously in the moment.
